Counseling Services

As an elementary school counselor, I utilize both individual counseling and small groups to support students' social, emotional, and academic well-being. Through both individual counseling and small groups, I aim to create a positive and inclusive school environment, fostering the overall growth and success of all students. If you ever have questions or concerns, please reach out!

It is important to note that individual counseling provided by the school counselor is not the same as clinical mental health therapy.

While both are focused on helping children, the school counselor's role is to assist with everyday challenges, provide guidance, and help students develop essential life skills. The goal is to create a positive and nurturing environment within the school setting, fostering the child's overall well-being. If more specialized or long-term mental health support is needed, the school counselor can help connect families with appropriate resources and professionals outside of the school setting.

Individual Counseling

Individual counseling services provided by a school counselor at the elementary level aim to support the social, emotional, and academic well-being of students. In individual counseling, I work one-on-one with students to address personal challenges, provide emotional support, and help develop coping strategies. This personalized approach allows for tailored assistance based on the unique needs of each student. Individual counseling is intended to be short term in the school setting.

Individual counseling services at the elementary level can include:

  • Emotional Support: Providing a safe space for students to express and understand their emotions.
  • Behavioral Guidance: Addressing and developing strategies for behavioral issues regarding conflict resolution and decision-making.
  • Academic Support: Assisting with goal setting, study skills, and addressing academic concerns.
  • Crisis Intervention: Offering immediate support in times of crisis or significant distress.
  • Friendship and Social Skills: Helping students develop positive social skills and navigate relationships with peers.
  • Personal Development: Boosting self-esteem, fostering a positive self-image, and exploring personal identity.

Small Group Counseling

In small groups, I will bring together students facing similar issues. Small groups provide a supportive environment where students can share experiences, learn from each other, and develop essential social and emotional skills. It's a chance for students with similar experiences or challenges to connect, support each other, and develop important life skills. Think of it as a little community within the school where kids can feel understood and build confidence! Through fun activities and discussions, the goal is to help them navigate through the ups and downs of growing up while creating a positive and inclusive school environment.

Small groups typically run 30 minutes once a week for 6-8 weeks. I work with teachers to determine the best time to pull students to minimize any impact on their academic learning.

Small group counseling topics at the elementary level can include:

  • Emotional Regulation/Feelings
  • Friendship and Social Skills
  • Self-Esteem and Confidence
  • Growth Mindset/Resiliency
  • Grief and Loss
  • Bullying Prevention
  • Conflict Resolution
  • Family Changes
  • Goal Setting
